Call to Worship
Psalm 34:1-4, 8, 9, 11

Leader:  I will bless the LORD at all times; his praise shall continually be in my mouth.

All:  My soul makes its boast in the LORD; let the humble hear and be glad.

Leader:  Oh, magnify the LORD with me, and let us exalt his name together!

All:  I sought the LORD, and he answered me and delivered me from all my fears.

Leader:  Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him!

All:  Oh, fear the LORD, you his saints, for those who fear him have no lack!

Leader:  Come, O children, listen to me; I will teach you the fear of the LORD.

Praise the Lord Ye Heavens
Young Oceans, Harvest

Praise the Lord Ye heavens adore him
Praise him angels in the height
Sun and moon, rejoice before him
Praise him, all ye stars of light

Praise the Lord for he hath spoken
Worlds his mighty voice obeyed
Laws which never shall be broken
For their guidance he hath made

CHORUS:
All creation join the song of praise
Let every tongue declare His mighty ways
And we will sing of Your goodness and mercy all of our days

Praise the Lord for he is glorious
Never shall his promise fail
God hath made his saints victorious
Sin and death shall not prevail (CHORUS)

Glory! Glory! All glory to You Lord!

Praise the God of our salvation
Hosts on high, his power proclaim
Heaven and earth, and all creation
Laud and magnify his Name (CHORUS)

Nearer My God To Thee
Text: Sarah F. Adams, 1841; Music: Lowell Mason, 1856.

Nearer, my God, to Thee, nearer to Thee!
E'en though it be a cross that raiseth me
Still all my song shall be; Nearer, my God, to Thee
Nearer, my God, to Thee, nearer to Thee!

Though like the wanderer, the sun gone down
Darkness be over me, my rest a stone
Yet in my prayers I'll be; Nearer, my God, to Thee
Nearer, my God, to Thee, nearer to Thee!

Then, with my waking thoughts bright with Thy praise
Out of my stony griefs, my song I'll raise
So by my woes to be; Nearer, my God, to Thee
Nearer, my God, to Thee, nearer to Thee!

Or if on joyful wing, breaking the sky
Sun, moon, and stars forgot, upward I fly
Still all my song shall be; Nearer, my God, to Thee
Nearer, my God, to Thee, nearer to Thee!

Confession of Sin
James 1:12-15

Leader:  Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial,

All:  for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him.

Leader:  Let no one say when he is tempted, "I am being tempted by God,"

All:  for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one.

Leader:  But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire.

All:  Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.

Silent Prayers

Assurance of God’s Forgiveness
James 1:16-18

Leader:  Do not be deceived, my beloved brothers.

All:  Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.

Leader:  Of his own will he brought us forth by the word of truth

All:  that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creation.

Jesus, Your Mercy
Songwriter(s): Bob Kauflin, Jordan Kauflin, Nathan Stiff

Jesus, Your mercy is all my plea
I have no defense, my guilt runs too deep
The best of my works pierced Your hands and Your feet
Jesus, Your mercy is all my plea

Jesus, Your mercy is all my boast
The goodness I claim, the grounds of my hope
Whatever I lack it’s still what I need most
Jesus, Your mercy is all my boast

CHORUS:
Praise the King who bore my sin
Took my place when I stood condemned
Oh how good You’ve always been to me
I will sing of Your mercy

Jesus, Your mercy is all my rest
When fears weigh me down and enemies press
A comfort I cling to in life and in death
Jesus Your mercy is all my rest

Jesus, your mercy is all my joy
Forever I’ll lift my heart and my voice
To sing of a treasure no pow’r can destroy
Jesus, your mercy is all my joy

We Need To Hear Your Word (Psalm 119:33-40)
Nathan Partain

Train our hearts to love what You command
We let go of our perceptions as You lead us by the hand
Every foreign step we trust You as we follow further on
As you give us your desire, we obey with all we are

CHORUS:
Oh, we need to hear Your Word
Oh, we need to hear Your Word
Please don’t let Your branches wither
or Your children die for thirst
Oh, we need to hear Your Word

Turn us back we try to fill our-selves.
Show the emptiness fulfillment is outside your perfect will,
O how easily like sheep deceived without their shpherd’s voice.
Make alive in us your scripture, melody against the noise.

BRIDGE:
Father, help our souls to hear You
Spirit, by Your power break through
Jesus, live in us and make true all You’ve said

Sermon Passage
Acts 4:32-5:11

32 Now the full number of those who believed were of one heart and soul, and no one said that any of the things that belonged to him was his own, but they had everything in common.  33 And with great power the apostles were giving their testimony to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was upon them all.  34 There was not a needy person among them, for as many as were owners of lands or houses sold them and brought the proceeds of what was sold  35 and laid it at the apostles' feet, and it was distributed to each as any had need.  36 Thus Joseph, who was also called by the apostles Barnabas (which means son of encouragement), a Levite, a native of Cyprus,  37 sold a field that belonged to him and brought the money and laid it at the apostles' feet.
5:1 But a man named Ananias, with his wife Sapphira, sold a piece of property,  2 and with his wife's knowledge he kept back for himself some of the proceeds and brought only a part of it and laid it at the apostles' feet.  3 But Peter said, "Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and to keep back for yourself part of the proceeds of the land?  4 While it remained unsold, did it not remain your own? And after it was sold, was it not at your disposal? Why is it that you have contrived this deed in your heart? You have not lied to men but to God."  5 When Ananias heard these words, he fell down and breathed his last. And great fear came upon all who heard of it.  6 The young men rose and wrapped him up and carried him out and buried him.
7 After an interval of about three hours his wife came in, not knowing what had happened.  8 And Peter said to her, "Tell me whether you sold the land for so much." And she said, "Yes, for so much."  9 But Peter said to her, "How is it that you have agreed together to test the Spirit of the Lord? Behold, the feet of those who have buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out."  10 Immediately she fell down at his feet and breathed her last. When the young men came in they found her dead, and they carried her out and buried her beside her husband.  11 And great fear came upon the whole church and upon all who heard of these things.

Leader:  The word of God,
All:  will stand forever. (Isaiah 40:8b)

Sermon
"A Sober Assessment of Sin"
Pastor Chris McLaughlin

Be Thou My Vision
Translated 1905 from the old Irish hymn “Bi Thusa ‘mo Shuile” by Mary E. Byrne. Arr. Ascend the Hill, 2010.

Be Thou my vision, O Lord of my heart
Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art
Thou my best thought, by day or by night
Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light

Be Thou my wisdom, Thou my true word
I ever with Thee and Thou with me, Lord
Thou my great Father, and I Thy true son
Thou in me dwelling and I with Thee one

Riches I heed not, nor man’s empty praise
Thou mine inheritance, now and always
Thou and Thou only first in my heart
High King of heaven, my treasure Thou art

BRIDGE:
Oh God, be my everything, be my delight
Be, Jesus, my glory, my soul satisfied

High King of heaven, my victory won
May I reach heaven's joys, O bright heaven's sun
Heart of my own heart, whatever befall
Still be my vision, O ruler of all; Still be my vision, O ruler of all

The Church’s One Foundation
Hal Hopson, Samuel Stone, Samuel S. Wesley; Arr: Perimeter Worship.

The Church’s one foundation is Jesus Christ her Lord
She is His new creation by water and the Word
From Heaven He came and sought her to be His holy bride
With His Own Blood He bought her, and for her life He died

Elect from every nation, yet one o’er all the earth
Her charter of salvation, one Lord, one faith, one birth
One holy name she blesses, partakes one holy food
And to one Hope she presses, with every grace endued

Hallelujah! Our salvation; Jesus Christ is our foundation
Hallelujah! Our salvation; Jesus Christ is our foundation

‘Mid toil and tribulation, and tumult of her war
She waits the consummation of peace forevermore
Till, with the vision glorious, her longing eyes are blest
And the great church victorious shall be the church at rest

Yet she on earth hath union with God the Three in One
And mystic sweet communion with those whose rest is won
O happy ones and holy! Lord give us grace that we
Like them the meek and lowly, on high may dwell with Thee

Benediction
† We invite you to stretch out your hands as you receive the Lord’s blessing.
