Come Thou Long Expected Jesus
Charles Wesley, 1744.
Come, thou long expected Jesus, born to set thy people free;
from our fears and sins release us, let us find our rest in thee.
Israel's strength and consolation, hope of all the earth thou art;
dear desire of every nation, joy of every longing heart.
Joy to those who long to see thee, Dayspring from on high appear.
Come thou promised Rod of Jesse, Of thy birth we long to hear!
Leaving riches without number, Born within a cattle stall;
Go to him your praises bring, Christ the Lord has come to earth.
Come to earth to taste our sadness, He whose glories knew no end.
By his life he brings us gladness, Our Redeemer, Shepherd, Friend.
Leaving riches without number, Born within a cattle stall;
This the everlasting wonder, Christ was born the Lord of all.
Born thy people to deliver, born a child and yet a King,
born to reign in us forever, now thy gracious kingdom bring.
By thine own eternal spirit, rule in all our hearts alone;
by thine all sufficient merit, raise us to thy glorious throne.
Confession of Sin
Zephaniah 3:1-5
Leader: Woe to her who is rebellious and defiled, the oppressing city!
All: She listens to no voice; she accepts no correction. She does not trust in the LORD; she does not draw near to her God.
Leader: Her officials within her are roaring lions; her judges are evening wolves that leave nothing till the morning.
All: Her prophets are fickle, treacherous men; her priests profane what is holy; they do violence to the law.
Leader: The LORD within her is righteous;
All: he does no injustice; every morning he shows forth his justice; each dawn he does not fail; but the unjust knows no shame.
Our Confession
† Silent Prayer of Confession
Assurance of Forgiveness
Zephaniah 3:14-17
Leader: Sing aloud, O daughter of Zion; shout, O Israel!
All: Rejoice and exult with all your heart, O daughter of Jerusalem!
The LORD has taken away the judgments against you; he has cleared away your enemies.
Leader: The King of Israel, the LORD, is in your midst; you shall never again fear evil.
All: On that day it shall be said to Jerusalem: “Fear not, O Zion; let not your hands grow weak. The LORD your God is in your midst, a mighty one who will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness; he will quiet you by his love; he will exult over you with loud singing.
My Hope Is Built on Nothing Less
By Edward Mote, 1834.
My hope is built on nothing less
than Jesus' blood and righteousness
I dare not trust the sweetest frame
but wholly lean on Jesus' name
REFRAIN:
On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand
All other ground is sinking sand
All other ground is sinking sand
When darkness veils His lovely face
I rest on His unchanging grace
in every high and stormy gale
my anchor holds within the veil
His oath, His covenant, His blood
support me in the whelming flood
When all around my soul gives way
He then is all my hope and stay
When He shall come with trumpet sound
O may I then in Him be found
Dressed in His righteousness alone
faultless to stand before the throne

Sermon Passage
Luke 1:46-55
46 And Mary said,
"My soul magnifies the Lord,
47 and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
48 for he has looked on the humble estate of his servant.
For behold, from now on all generations will call me blessed;
49 for he who is mighty has done great things for me,
and holy is his name.
50 And his mercy is for those who fear him
from generation to generation.
51 He has shown strength with his arm;
he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts;
52 he has brought down the mighty from their thrones
and exalted those of humble estate;
53 he has filled the hungry with good things,
and the rich he has sent empty away.
54 He has helped his servant Israel,
in remembrance of his mercy,
55 as he spoke to our fathers,
to Abraham and to his offspring forever."
Leader: The grass withers, the flower fades,
All: ...but the word of our God will stand forever. (Isaiah 40:8)
Sermon
"Holy Is His Name"
Pastor Chris McLaughlin
Of The Father’s Love Begotten
Translator: J. M. Neale; Translator: H. W. Baker; Author: Aurelius Clemens Prudentius.
Of the Father's love begotten,
Ere the worlds began to be,
He is Alpha and Omega,
He the source, the ending He,
Of the things that are, that have been,
And that future years shall see,
Evermore and evermore.
O that birth forever blessèd,
When the virgin, full of grace,
By the Holy Ghost conceiving,
Bore the Savior of our race,
And the babe, the world’s Redeemer,
First revealed his sacred face—
Evermore and evermore.
This is he whom heav’n-taught singers
Sang of old with one accord,
Whom the Scriptures of the prophets
Promised in their faithful word;
Now he shines, the long-expected;
Let creation praise its Lord—
Evermore and evermore.
O ye heights of Heav’n adore him!
Angel hosts his praises sing!
All dominions bow before him
And extol our God and King.
Let no tongue on Earth be silent,
Every voice in concert ring—
Evermore and evermore.
Christ! to thee with God the Father,
And O Holy Ghost, to thee,
Hymn and chant and high thanksgiving
And unwearied praises be,
Honor, glory, and dominion,
And eternal victory—
Evermore and evermore.

Hark the Herald Angels Sing
1739, Charles Wesley, adapted by George Whitefield. Based on Luke 2:14.
Hark the herald angels sing, Glory to the newborn King
Peace on earth and mercy mild, God and sinners reconciled
Joyful all ye nations rise, Join the triumph of the skies
With th'angelic hosts proclaim, Christ is born in Bethlehem
Hark the herald angels sing, Glory to the newborn King
Christ by highest heav'n adored, Christ the everlasting Lord
Late in time behold Him come, Offspring of a virgin's womb
Veiled in flesh the Godhead see, Hail th'incarnate Deity
Pleased as man with men to dwell, Jesus our Emmanuel
Hark the herald angels sing, Glory to the newborn King
Hail the heav'n born Prince of Peace, Hail the Sun of righteousness
Light and life to all He brings, Ris'n with healing in His wings
Mild He lays His glory by, Born that man no more may die
Born to raise the sons of earth, Born to give them second birth
Hark the herald angels sing, Glory to the newborn King
Benediction
† We invite you to stretch out your hands as you receive the Lord’s blessing.
