Session One - Introduction to 1 John
Who is John? Why did he write this letter?
1 John displays John's love for his readers, his
concern for his readers, and his hope for his readers.
1 John displays John's love for his readers, his
concern for his readers, and his hope for his readers.
Session Two - 1 John 1:1-4
In this session, we hear from Logan Reese who teaches on the introduction to 1 John. The Apostle John establishes his authority as an apostle and sets up his purpose for writing this letter.
Session Three - 1 John 1:5-2:2
In this section, the Apostle emphasizes the importance of being honest about our sinful condition and then shows us the way to freedom.
Session Four - 1 John 2:3-17
Jesus is not merely a teacher who informs our intellect, but He forms our loves. In this session, we look at how the Apostle helps us to see Jesus' work in our lives through our transformation and obedience.
Session Five - 1 John 2:18-25
John addresses the issue of the antichrists -- false teachers who have perpetuated the belief that Jesus is not the Christ. But John's readers, the believers, can have confidence in their salvation as they abide in Christ.
Session Six - 1 John 2:28-3:10
John makes the shocking claim that there is no neutral position -- we are either in God's family or the family of the devil. This reality though can give the Christian assurance and help us to interact with non-believers.
Session Seven - 1 John 3:11-4:6
What is love? John contrasts Cain with Christ to show us how love is self-sacrificing, and challenges his readers to love their Christian brothers and sisters with this kind of self-sacrificing love.
Session Eight - 1 John 4:7-21
If God is love, then anyone who claims to know and love God will display love to those God loves too. John calls this the "perfection" of God's love within the Christian.
Session Nine - 1 John 5:1-12
What does "the water and the blood" mean? This confusing passage can be more clearly understood when we see that God Himself has given us evidence that Jesus is the Christ.
Session Ten - 1 John 5:13-21
1 John is a tale of two stories. One story is the story the world is telling them... the story of Gnosticism. The other is the gospel. Which story John's readers believe will shape their view of God and life.
