Call to Worship
1 Peter 2:9-10

Leader:  But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.

All:  Once you were not a people, but now you are God's people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

Prayer of Adoration

Crown Him With Many Crowns
By:  Matthew Bridges (1851); Godfrey Thring (1871)

Crown Him with many crowns, the Lamb upon His throne
Hark!  How the heavenly anthem drowns all music but its own
Awake, my soul, and sing of Him who died for thee
And hail Him as thy matchless King through all eternity

Crown Him the Lord of love, behold His hands and side
Rich wounds, yet visible above, in beauty glorified
No angel in the sky can fully bear that sight
But downward bends his burning eye at mysteries so bright

Crown Him the Lord of life who triumphed over the grave
Who rose victorious to the strife for those He came to save
His glories now we sing, who died and rose on high
Who died eternal life to bring, and lives that death may die

Crown Him the Lord of years, the potentate of time
Creator of the rolling spheres, ineffably sublime
All hail, Redeemer, hail, for Thou hast died for me
Be Thou, O Lord, through endless days, adored and magnified

Prayer of Confession
1 Peter 2:11-17

Leader:  Beloved, I urge you as sojourners and exiles to abstain from the passions of the flesh, which wage war against your soul.

All:  Keep your conduct among the Gentiles honorable, so that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day of visitation.

Leader:  Be subject for the Lord's sake to every human institution, whether it be to the emperor as supreme, or to governors as sent by him to punish those who do evil and to praise those who do good. For this is the will of God, that by doing good you should put to silence the ignorance of foolish people.

All:  Live as people who are free, not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil, but living as servants of God. Honor everyone. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the emperor.

God’s Assurance of Forgiveness
Romans 4:3-8

Leader:  For what does the Scripture say?

All:  "Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness."

Leader:  Now to the one who works, his wages are not counted as a gift but as his due. And to the one who does not work but trusts him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is counted as righteousness, just as David also speaks of the blessing of the one to whom God counts righteousness apart from works:

All:  "Blessed are those whose lawless deeds are forgiven, and whose sins are covered; blessed is the man against whom the Lord will not count his sin."

The Apostle’s Creed

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and Earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, and born of the virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended into hell.*  The third day he rose again from the dead.  He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.  From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church,** the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.  Amen.

* Latin Hades, which means the place of the dead.
** Holy catholic church refers to the church universal

This I Believe
By: Ben Fielding and Matt Crocker

Our Father everlasting, the all-creating One
God Almighty
Through your Holy Spirit, conceiving Christ the Son
Jesus our Savior

Chorus:
I believe in God our Father, I believe in Christ the Son
I believe in the Holy Spirit, our God is three in One
I believe in the resurrection, that we will rise again
For I believe in the Name of Jesus

Our Judge and our Defender, suffered and crucified
Forgiveness is in You
Descended into darkness, You rose in glorious light
Forever seated high

Bridge:
I believe in You, I believe You rose again
I believe that Jesus Christ is Lord

Chorus 2:
I believe in life eternal, I believe in the virgin birth
I believe in the saints' communion, and in Your Holy Church
I believe in the resurrection, when Jesus comes again
For I believe in the Name of Jesus
I believe in the Name of Jesus

Abide With Me
Words by: Henry Francis Lyte (1847); Arrangement: Indelible Grace Music

Abide with me, fast falls the eventide
The darkness deepens, Lord with me abide
When other helpers fail and comforts flee
Help of the helpless, abide with me

Thou on my head in early youth didst smile
And though rebellious and perverse meanwhile
Thou hast not left me, though I oft left Thee
On to the close Lord, abide with me

I need Thy presence, every passing hour
What but Thy grace can foil the tempter's power?
Who, like Thyself, my guide and stay can be?
Through cloud and sunshine, abide with me

I fear no foe, with Thee at hand to bless
Ills have no weight, tears lose their bitterness
Where is thy sting death? Where grave thy vic - tor - y?
I triumph still, abide with me

Hold Thou Thy cross, before my closing eyes
Shine through the gloom, and point me to the skies
Heaven's morning breaks, and earth's vain shadows flee
In life, in death, Lord, abide with me

Sermon Passage
Genesis 12:1-20

4 So Abram went, as the LORD had told him, and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he departed from Haran.  5 And Abram took Sarai his wife, and Lot his brother's son, and all their possessions that they had gathered, and the people that they had acquired in Haran, and they set out to go to the land of Canaan. When they came to the land of Canaan,  6 Abram passed through the land to the place at Shechem, to the oak of Moreh. At that time the Canaanites were in the land.  7 Then the LORD appeared to Abram and said, "To your offspring I will give this land." So he built there an altar to the LORD, who had appeared to him.  8 From there he moved to the hill country on the east of Bethel and pitched his tent, with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east. And there he built an altar to the LORD and called upon the name of the LORD.  9 And Abram journeyed on, still going toward the Negeb.  10 Now there was a famine in the land. So Abram went down to Egypt to sojourn there, for the famine was severe in the land.
11 When he was about to enter Egypt, he said to Sarai his wife, "I know that you are a woman beautiful in appearance,  12 and when the Egyptians see you, they will say, 'This is his wife.' Then they will kill me, but they will let you live.  13 Say you are my sister, that it may go well with me because of you, and that my life may be spared for your sake."  14 When Abram entered Egypt, the Egyptians saw that the woman was very beautiful.  15 And when the princes of Pharaoh saw her, they praised her to Pharaoh. And the woman was taken into Pharaoh's house.  16 And for her sake he dealt well with Abram; and he had sheep, oxen, male donkeys, male servants, female servants, female donkeys, and camels.  17 But the LORD afflicted Pharaoh and his house with great plagues because of Sarai, Abram's wife.  18 So Pharaoh called Abram and said, "What is this you have done to me? Why did you not tell me that she was your wife?  19 Why did you say, 'She is my sister,' so that I took her for my wife? Now then, here is your wife; take her, and go."  20 And Pharaoh gave men orders concerning him, and they sent him away with his wife and all that he had.

Pastor:  The grass withers and the flower fades..
All:  ...but the word of our God will stand forever. (Isaiah 40:8)

"A Recurring Story"

Yet Not I but Through Christ in Me
By CityAlight

What gift of grace is Jesus my Redeemer
There is no more for heaven now to give
He is my joy, my righteousness, and freedom
My steadfast love, my deep and boundless peace
To this I hold, my hope is only Jesus
For my life is wholly bound to His
Oh, how strange and divine, I can sing, all is mine
Yet not I, but through Christ in me

The night is dark, but I am not forsaken
For by my side, the Savior He will stay
I labour on in weakness and rejoicing
For in my need His power is displayed
To this I hold, my Shepherd will defend me
Through the deepest valley He will lead
Oh, the night has been won, and I shall overcome
Yet not I, but through Christ in me

No fate I dread, I know I am forgiven
The future sure, the price it has been paid
For Jesus bled and suffered for my pardon
And He was raised to overthrow the grave
To this I hold, my sin has been defeated
Jesus now and ever is my plea
Oh, the chains are released, I can sing, I am free
Yet not I, but through Christ in me

With every breath I long to follow Jesus
For He has said that He will bring me home
And day by day I know He will renew me
Until I stand with joy before the throne
To this I hold, my hope is only Jesus
All the glory evermore to Him
When the race is complete, still my lips shall repeat
Yet not I, but through Christ in me

How Great Thou Art
1885 Carl Boberg. 1949 Stuart K. Hine. 2018 Shane and Shane.

Oh Lord, my God, when I in awesome wonder
Consider all the worlds Thy hands have made
I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder
Thy power throughout the universe displayed

Chorus: Then sings my soul, my Savior God to Thee
How great Thou art, how great Thou art
Then sings my soul, my Savior God to Thee
How great Thou art, how great Thou art

And when I think that God, His Son not sparing
Sent Him to die, I scarce can take it in
That on the cross, my burden gladly bearing
He bled and died to take away my sin

When Christ shall come, with shout of acclamation
And take me home, what joy shall fill my heart
Then I shall bow, in humble adoration
And then proclaim, my God, how great Thou art

Benediction
† We invite you to stretch out your hands as you receive the Lord’s blessing.
